QotW: Fire in the Night Results

We got one of the highlights of the Ered Mithrin cycle this past week. Fire in the Night is a great combination of boss-fight, clearing objectives, and maintaining the strength of the quest card all in one package. Because of this, we expected an increase in the number of participants for this week’s QotW, which was also helped by the Epic Multiplayer playthrough we did last Saturday. The stream of which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rX3kywNcEI

Let’s see how everyone else did during this week’s quest, and what progress was made in the campaigns.

Achievements

With so much going on in this quest, it wasn’t too hard to come up with the two achievements for this quest. On top of that, FFG also added their own achievement for this quest, which pairs nicely with one of mine.

We Stopped All the Fires

Complete all eight Fire in the Night encounter side quests.

We Should Have Built a Bigger Wall

Setup: Set the number of quest points on Hrogar’s Hill to 35.

We Didn’t Start the Fire [Ered Mithrin Campaign Guide Achievement]

Win Fire in the Night with 10 or fewer damage on Hrogar’s Hill.

Encounter card Opinions

There is an obvious winner for best encounter cards in the quest, and it is Wooden Palisade. This location lets you reduce the Dragon’s attack stat by 2, saving you from taking as much damage as you otherwise would. It also allows the first player to ready a hero when you travel here, which is great for defenders who need to block another Dragon attack.

Three treacheries got the top spot for least favourite encounter card of the deck, so you’d better bring some treachery cancelation with you to this quest next time. Gathering Gloom is rough since your threat will skyrocket in this quest, and this does you no favors. The same goes for Swarm of Bats, though that also steals your resources. Finally, you also did not enjoy Dragon’s Fury, in which the dragon will make additional attacks against you. This shadow effect also is quite brutal in this quest, so I understand why it’s up here.

Cool moments that happened during the games

I had a spike with 11 ennemies engaged with silver lamp. It was very funny to manage them all without taking damage and then draw 11 with sarn ford sentry and have 11 resources with knowledge of the enemy ! 🙂

I survived 4 Dagnir attacks in one round: his quest phase attack, then a treachery made him attack, then his shadow card during the combat phase me him attack again. Fortunately, Grimbeorn had a Shield, a Helm, a Hauberk and the Unbroken boon, so he didn’t even take damage. He also had enough readying to block 4 times, but one more attack would have wiped me out.

We lost our epic multiplayer game 😦

Gathering Gloom consistently made us reveal tons of encounter cards and raise our threat by a ton until we all threated out 😦

Fun to play this again in epic multiplayer. I’m really proud of the work we did in making this one.

Tried my hand with a Mono Tactics deck that strived to accomplish all 3 achievements thanks to an early setup with Beregond

I wanted to go for the achievements so I took the strongest deck I could think of – a Bond of Friendship Vilya deck, including Spirit Dain Ironfoot to defend from turn 1. With some luck and planning, I was able to travel to all three Wooden Palisades throughout the game at strategically important moments: once after the Fortify the Defence sidequest was revealed, once when I intended to quest against the Draw Her Fire sidequest, and once more on the last turn of the game.

The first few times I played, I thought Wooden Palisade gave Dagnir +2 attack instead of -2. It was really nice when I figured out I’d been playing that wrong. For one of my wins, Hrogar’s Hill had 49 damage on it. I was glad to be able to get the final 5 damage on Dagnir that round!

I’ve wanted to make Pippin and Merry work with an army of Ents for a long time, so I made some homebrew heroes for them that really help an Ent swarm get going. This ends up being pretty powerful, though with both of them really only contributing 2 willpower each besides this, this quest still ended up being quite difficult , and the wrong side quests coming out early can easily overwhelm you. I also used Spirit Frodo to help take some of Dagnir’s attacks, and some other enemies’ who engaged. Deck, with description of custom Pippin and Merry, is here: https://ringsdb.com/deck/view/539068

You better get started quickly on next week’s quest, because it is going to take a while. The Ghost of Framsburg is a notoriously long quest, though I have heard that the campaign mode does fix some issues with that quest. Let’s hope enough people manage to beat the quest in 7 days time. If you do complete the quest, please fill out this form before crashing onto your bed from exhaustion: https://forms.gle/7x9z2GtSoZX7QNfv6

Achievements for this quest will hopefully distract you a bit from the repetitive rounds. They are:

Gotta Ghost Fast

Complete the scenario in less than an hour.

Better Mode:

Forced: When a Loot objective is placed in the encounter discard pile, shuffle it back into the encounter deck.

I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghost [Ered Mithrin Campaign Guide Achievement]:

Win The Ghost of Framsburg after defeating Fram’s Shade 3 or more times.
